Crybabies need not apply
The playoffs are here, the teams are poised and ready, and the super bowl is right around the corner. I’m not talking about football though, what I’m talking about is the greatest sport in the world, American politics, and like football it’s a full contact sport with no crybabies allowed. Today the Iowa caucuses were held and there were no shortage of upsets and surprises this time around. There was also no shortage of whining especially on the local talk radio circuit. On my way into work today I was listening to Doug Wright cry about the horrible treatment that governor Romney was getting from the Huckabee campaign. Wright was especially disillusioned by the Huckabee camps, and others, questions about the Governors religion. Wright was railing about how the questions about the governor’s religion were the dirtiest of political maneuvers and that the governor was taking the high road and would never stoop as low as Huckabee and others by participating in attacks such as these. Now, while I agree that going after someone’s religion or personal life is unscrupulous I also believe that the old adage "All is fair in love and war." definitely applies to American politics, and if you don’t think this is war maybe you can tell me how the flowers smell in the land of OZ. These people are running to be the most powerful and influential human being on the planet. People all over the planet live and die by the decisions made by the person that holds this office. The people that run for this office as well as the people who support them need to know that there is no such thing as dirty politics, those two words are synonymous with each other, and there is no blow too low. If you can’t stand the sight of you own blood, if you don’t think your opponent will exploit even the most personal of your weaknesses to gain even a tenth of a percentage point, and especially if you can’t pick yourself up off the mat after getting your spine ripped out, then you need not even think of applying for this position. Condoleezza Rice realized this hard fact about the political process in this country and chose not to apply and I respect that. I also respect those that choose to put themselves into this meat grinder, but they can’t cry when someone pokes them in a in a spot that hurts, that’s the way the game is played. Tonight Romney got his ass handed to him by Huckabee by NINE percentage points in Iowa, that hurts, and I’m sure tomorrow morning old Doug Wright is going to cry about how it’s because Romney is a Mormon and Huckabee is a dirty politician and a bigot. None of that matters. What matters is that, like it or not, Huckabee obviously did the right thing politically because he won. What Romney and especially his supporters need to do is not cry about it, get up off of the blood-soaked mat, get their asses over to New Hampshire, and hit Huckabee right between the eyes with anything, no matter how dirty, that they’ve got. You think its dirty now? Its gonna get a lot dirtier over the next year and everyone needs to get ready and sharpen their swords. As for Hillary "third place" Clinton, she needs to understand that she can’t skate her way to the nomination on her husband’s name and record. After tonight old Hill needs to realize that there’s no way the American people are gonna let her sleepwalk her way into the Whitehouse by dodging every hard venue and question that comes her way. Standby, the days to come are gonna be even more exciting!
